Welcome to the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Political and Social Sciences (Otto-Suhr-Institute). This page is designed as a guide to our teaching and research activities.

The Berlin Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence has been conducting research in the field of European economic policy-making, European integration, and policy studies since 1998. Directed by Prof. Dr. Michael Bolle, its research and teaching staff - including a Jean Monnet Chair - possesses wide ranging expertise in economics and political science together with practical policy-making experience.

Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence are awarded by the European Union as part of a Europe-wide network of currently 101 selected research institutions.

The Berlin Centre is part of the Otto-Suhr-Institute at the Freie Universität of Berlin, one of the leading political science locations in Europe. Research at the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence focuses on the processes associated with both integration and decision-making in the EU. The methodological foundation is that of positive analysis, generally based on rational choice approaches.

The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership [ www.go-euromed.org ]

The GO-EuroMed project focuses on the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership in the context of the enlarged EU's efforts to encourage good governance throughout its neighbourhood. GO-EuroMed is a Specific Targeted Research Project co-funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme. Its objective is to develop policy relevant understanding of the political and institutional settings through which EU-Mediterranean relations are conducted. The GO-EuroMed consortium is coordinated by the JMC Berlin and includes research institutes and universities from Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Turkey, Morocco, Jordan and Lebanon. A core aim of the project is to provide new insights into Euro-Mediterranean governance by bringing European and Mediterranean perspectives together.

Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, Winner of the 2007 Bernácer Prize

The 2007 Bernácer Prize has been awarded to Prof. Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas (University of California, Berkeley) for his important research on explaining recent (puzzling) facts in global macroeconomics and finance, evaluating the gains of financial integration and analyzing the importance of precautionary saving in optimal life-cycle models of consumption expenditure in the presence of uncertain labour income
